A Salthill man who was ordained to the priesthood in 1982 was appointed diocesan administrator earlier this week.

Parents and families who have experienced the death of a child before or shortly after birth or at a later stage are invited to remember their loved ones at a special Mass of Remembrance which will take place on Sunday at Galway Cathedral.

Galway City Museum needs your help to tell Galway’s revolutionary story in a new exhibition entitled Revolution in Galway, 1913-1923, due to open in Spring 2016.  This exhibition offers Galway people the chance to have their story told alongside the national story that we are already so familiar with.  The Revolutionary years leading up to the Easter Rising of 1916 through to the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War had a major impact on the shaping of modern Ireland. What part did Galway play? What steered ordinary Irish people on the path towards Irish Nationalism? 

“Catholic cathedrals in Ireland are monuments to our imitative instincts and conservative distrust of artistic originality. There are examples of new church architecture but in general, Church authorities remained faithful to the Middle Ages and refused to abandon medieval architecture. It is therefore understandable that in 1949 when the building of Galway Cathedral was commissioned, it should have been conceived in a hybrid Romanesque style. In 1959, the foundation stone was laid and on August 15, 1965, the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas was dedicated by Cardinal Cushing. In December that year the Vatican Council solemnly ended its revolutionary document The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which rendered the shape, style, arrangement, and setting of such buildings obsolete and anachronistic. This building was almost an object lesson in insularity. It is clear from the late Bishop of Galway’s instructions that for him art can be no more than decoration, an illustration of scripture or a clearly formulated theology. Art is never an original source, a spiritual revelation, a doing of theology.”

Galway’s civic and religious leaders will be delivering their Christmas messages on Galway Bay fm on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

THE ANNUAL series of summer concerts in Galway Cathedral returns on Thursday July 3 with a performance by Australian-born organist and pianist Tristan Russcher.

The man described as the ‘most important person ever to visit Ballybrit Racecourse’ will be remembered with fondness there on Sunday at a special thanksgiving Mass at noon.

GALWAY CATHEDRAL will be treated to a concert of organ duets by Hamburg husband and wife team Uwe and Judith Bestert this evening at 8pm.

On this day, February 7, in the year 1886, St Joseph’s Church was consecrated. It was to be the main church of the Parish of Rahoon, which at that time extended from Corcullen to Furbo. There were already two chapels in the parish, one in Bushypark and one in Barna, and they served their own areas. For those parishioners living closer to the town, there was no designated church. Some would attend Mass in the chapel of the Presentation Convent, but it was not very large and worshippers often had to kneel on the ground outside, irrespective of the weather conditions. The parish had a big population and major annual events such as confirmation had to be moved to the Pro-Cathedral.

A special mass will take place on Sunday October 14 in Galway Cathedral at 3pm to launch the “Year of Faith” for the Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh & Kilfenora.
